- Thanks for replying. Your solution, however, is precisely what I am trying to
- avoid. Because there may be more than one person in a family, I want to break
- out family data such as address and phone number into a separate data base.
- This will allow a single change to ensure that all members of the family are
- updated correctly and no one is missed. My minimum requirement is that I not
- enter the same information on more than one record (no redundant data).
-
- Hyperlink will let me store the information the way I need it; but not report
- on it. Guess I'll have to write a standalone report program or get a database
- package that will let me do joins.

- Greetings!
-
- I also have version 1.52 (purchased today - new) and would like to know more
- about the new features. I have seen the message that says the new version of
- Hyperlink is v2.0; is the upgrade cost still $10?
-
- I am perfectly willing to get this information "second hand" from another user
- who has a newer version. After all, wouldn't want the staff to stop mailing
- people's upgrades to answer my questions. :)
-
- BTW, this seems like an excellent program from what I've been able to read of

- I don't know what other modules or apllications that you have planned for the
- future, but I would *VERY* much like to see a kind of stripped down accessory
- version.
-
- I have somewhere between 100-150 email addresses that I have to keep handy.
- Aladdin's Adress Book feature is getting nearly impossible to deal with. If I
- could have something similiar to the Address.HAP as an ACC I would be
- immensely happy.
-
- For all intents and purposes, all that I am looking for is an open ended ACC
- program. Kind of an ACC version of the Hyperlink program. Access to a
- database and hypertext is sufficient for my needs. I do not need sound or
- atrwork.
-
- Basically what I would like to do is open the Hyper.ACC and see an index:
- Atari Companies
- Dragon's Gate
- MPGRT
-
- be able to click on one of the above and get another index:
-
- Atari Companies
- CodeHead Technologies
- JMG Software
- Migraph
-
- and after choosing the company getting one last index showing the people:
-
- Atari Companies
- JMG Software
- George Geczy JMG.SOFT
- David Thompson D.THOMPSON66
-
- at this point I can now click on David's name and see whatever I have stored
- in the database.
-
- Now, it may seem this is rather round about, but let's face it - frequently we
- know/remember only the barest essentials of things. Whatever we use
- frequently, affects us personally, etc. Otherwise, information is placed into
- the brain's trashcan. An indexed organizational search system would make
- things alot easier to try and find information.
-
- Granted, a Search would do effectively the same thing. But that assumes that
- I (or any other user) will remember the information that the database is
- sorted on.
-
- Ahuh, right. I'll never find it. :)

- Everybody... Sorry for the delay in responding to questions around here in
- the last month or two, but babies have this way of demanding all your waking
- hours, and most of your sleeping ones :-)
-
- MidiMike : To change a registration, just send us the original Disk One along
- with your complete address. That way we'll be able to delete the original
- purchaser and change everything to your name.
-
- Cliff : What Mark said... :-) As far as making applications "Stand Alone", we
- hope to have the Run-Only version of HyperLINK available for the Glendale
- show. For around $25 US someone will be able to purchase a version of
- HyperLINK that can run any HAP out there but will not be able to use either
- the Builder or the Report Generator so they will not be allowed to create or
- modify HAPs or existing Reports.

- Sorry to here that, the solution wasn't what you needed, but I wouldn't give
- up yet. I find with HyperLink that there's almost always a way to do
- something. You may have to re-think the problem from a different angle though.
- Plus there's new features being added all the time that allow more

-
- The report generator is still in it's early stages, I mentioned the same

-
- The only way we allow change of Registration is that a new owner send us the
- original diskettes along with a letter. Then we will modify our data base
- (eliminating the first owner) and all future mailings will go out to the new
- owner.
-
- Fred...
-
- Anyone who purchases a copy of HyperLINK before Version 2.0 is entitled to a
- free upgrade to that version (including the new manual). So if you see an
- older version in a store, you don't have to worry about being stuck with it.

- The chances of a HyperLINK Lite? What do you mean by Lite? There will be a
- Run Only version of HyperLINK made available in the Very Very Near Future and
- also we will be starting to license HyperLINK for those that have written Haps
- they wish to commercially market. Other than that... probably slim.
-
- Cliff...
-
- I have told George to catch up on the messages here to see if there is

- maybe George will be able to help further.
-
- Lyre...
-
- Who told you there was an upgrade charge of $10? The upgrades to 2.0 are
- FREE!!! Just get us your registration card ASAP! And if you liked the first
- manual (you're probably the only one), then you're going to love the new
- manual!!! As far as HyperLINK being a Desk Accessory ever... Not unless in
- future you can have Desk Accessory that are about 300K. Sorry...
-

-
- Your change of address has been noted, and just in time too!
-

-
- I myself would love it if HyperLINK could be a D.A. but under the current

-
- I realized I goofed after the message was posted. :) I bought a couple of

-
- As to the "ASAP" registration card shipment, it went out this morning by US
- Postal Express mail. They said it should take about 2 days. Is their any
- chance of getting version 2 rushed out to me once you receive the
- registration? I'll be going on vacation around it's ETA for registered
- owners. I'll be gone until September. The anticipation will kill me! :)
- BTW, I'm perfectly willing to pay the additional fees associated with any type
- of Express Mail service.
-
- Why would a _potential_ (don't want to start any rumors) DA version of
- Hyperlink be that large? In this case I'm talking about a very stripped down
- version of Hyperlink. Only the database module would be available. Graphics,
- sound, etc would all be dropped. Basically I'm asking for something roughly
- equivalent to being able to run the ADDRESS.HAP or MESSAGE.HAP files (or the
- equivalent). The only new "feature" would be an index. Take a look at
- NOTES.ARC (notes3.arc I think) in the library for what I mean. (Unfortunately
- I can not get ahold of the company to see if they still offer that product.)

- No...I'd like a desk accessory which is a run-only module, containing
- NONE of the stuff necessary to build HAPs, but all of the stuff needed
- to run them. You'd call up the DA from the Desk menu within applications
- or on the desktop, identify a HAP to load, and go...
-
- This is a feature which would make any HAP available while within, say,
- a word processor writing a report, or online looking up your buddy's
- GEnie address. I run into this problem using other databases. I keep
- duplicate datafiles for TrackerST and CardFile for just this reason:
- I really like some of the more extensive features of TrackerST, but the
- immediate accessibility of my database through CardFile's desk accessory
- version can't be beat for convenience. A DA version of HyperLINK would
- give me that same kind of ready info on datafiles that are not limited
- to a list of addresses.

- David,
-
- re: Hyperlink as an Accessory
-
- That's not quite what I meant. I'm looking for a Run Only Accessory version
- of Hyperlink. Basically think of it as a combination of the Show function
- from the Desktop with Hypertext ability.
-
- I in no way want to be able to create or edit a HAP. I might want to edit the
- data (that is, add a record, update a record, etc) but that would be it.
-
- Trying to create a HAP while running another program would be *way* to
- cumbersome. Although, admittedly, their are times that it would be handy.
- (Like creating the equivalent of an "on-line help" feature for other
- programs.) However, with the ability to have a Hypertext Accessory, I would
- be satisfied.
-
- Hmmmm, looking over some of my comments, maybe I should add that I want text
- ONLY. No sound, no graphics, no builder, nothing. I just want the ability to
- look up text from within an accessory that would allow me to organize the text
- into logical groupings (as indicated / shown in my first message concerning a
- Hyperlink DA). Icons on the "form" might be nice, but I can do without them.
- Again, what I'm looking for would simply allow me to run an already existing
- HAP - for instance MESSAGE.HAP
-
- Anyway, I hope this clarifies things a bit more.

- Howdy all!
-
- Just thought I'd drop by a note to say that upgrades are proceeding out at
- (finally!) a faster pace now, and the majority of people should start to see
- them in a few days. Of course, David's now on vacation, so he leaves all the
- dirty work to me.
-
- While I'm here, I did want to address a recent topic:
-
- After reading the recent Desk Accessory comments, I've given it some more
- thought and may work on some prototypes to see how it can be implemented. One
- fundamental problem is, however, the extensibility of HyperLINK itself. True,
- you haven't seen much in the way of extensions or loadable modules yet,
- (_yet_), HyperLINK does feature a very strong tie-in feature. This should
- finally be exploited a little bit with the planned release of our "developers
- kit" for C programmers, due out at the Glendale show.
-
- This is fine for a program version, but becomes much more difficult to handle
- in a desk accessory. The solution, though, is to limit the accessory to a set
- of "standard" modules, namely the DATABASE, EDITOR, and GRAPHICS features.
- This covers all the "basic" HAPs you can make with the current HyperLINK, and
- probably 95% of what anyone will ever want to do.
-
- It would probably be big, ie about 200K... something you have to consider
- before you toss an accessory on to your system. Also, the fact that files
- must be opened on the fly creates problems especially with earlier versions of
- TOS; desk accessories are not supposed to open files and keep them open.
-
- Gotta think about that one...
-
- -- George.

-
- Thank you for considering it. Aladdin's gotten to the point now where it will

-
- If I can remove the addresses to an Accessory (especially one that would allow
- me to organize everything into coherent groups) it would be a godsend.
-
- Probably my only other "desire" would be the ability to take an email address
- and "dump" the text chosen into a word processor / text editor. But that
- might be pushing things so I'm willing to do without it. :)

- If you want to search for something (text) in a database from a DA, you could
- always just open EdHak and load/search the database file for the text of
- interest (e.g., a person's name)... the other info you want (e.g. the address)
- will be right by the name. Granted, this won't be a nice pretty display
- (you'd have to toggle into hack mode since the data isn't stored with carriage
- returns), but it is legible (I just tried it while typing this message). This
- even allows editing the text if you want, but obviously not creating new

- Ahh... the ol' "import modules" question. I started work on these already
- once or twice, but it is really a can of worms in a way. It is HyperLINK's
- visual interface that makes part of this difficult; unlike a dBASE database,
- in HyperLINK people don't usually see how their fields are laid out and what
- types of fields they have (and in what order). The internal dBASE structure
- may in fact be different than what the visual structure is.
-
- I still have a few ideas, however, and I may be able to kludge something
- together for Glendale.
-
- And, speaking of Glendale... ! (how's THAT for a smooth transition?)
-
- Yesirreee, we are booked and will certainly be there! Details of what we'll
- be showing once David gets back, but we will be attending both Glendale and
- Waace this fall. So, look for us!
-
- And one last bit of news... as of this week, 99% of all upgrades to Version 2
- have been sent out. Give it a few days if you haven't seen yours yet. Also,
- you may want to check two facts: 1) did you send in your registration card?
- and 2) if you received an "Upgrade Disk" to version 1.6, did you send it back
- to us (as the letter with the disk requested)? If you were sent and upgrade
- disk and did not send it back, you will not automatically be sent the V2
- upgrade for free.

- George and/or David,
-
- One thing that I did notice was that CodeKeys (v1.3 I think) and HyperLINK
- aren't 100% compatible. I was setting up a kind of spreadsheet / database
- HAP; the fields being named numerical (Power1, Power2, etc).
-
- I use ALT+LSHIFT+P and *several* times the builder window scrambled. It
- basically showed the equivalent of "snow", or what some art file viewers show
- when they accept one format version and you're using a different one (i.e.,
- shows GIF v1 but you try loading a GIF v2 [names made up as example]). This
- macro was basically to enter a field size of 2, tab twice and enter the word
- "power" in the field name. Then it was to stop so I could enter the #.
-
- It worked a couple times and didn't a couple of times. After 3 or 4 cold
- boots I removed CodeKeys. BTW, this even happened after I did a "Clear All"
- and pressed the key combo (if memory serves me).
-
- I've got about two pages of comments, corrections, improvements, wish list,
- etc. However, with vacation pending (T-14 hrs to departure!), I will refrain
- from further comments at the moment. (Which will also save me potential
- embarrassment in case "it's in there" and I don't see it!) Expect it around
- September.
-
- I can say this much, I know I would like to see the index greatly improved and
- cross-indexed (Their is no entry at all for the word "icon"). I would also
- like to see a new section: "Section 1.5 Using a HyperLINK Application"; to my
- mind, the manual is far to specific to construction and offers little help for
- using HAPs.
-
- Lyre
-
- PS: BTW, I got a message from the postal service - it seems they have a
- package from Canada for me... Getting it tommorrow, but no way I can confirm
- it's from you except by voice.

- George or Dave,
-
- Rcvd my upgrade today, but the packaging was moderately trashed (the disk was
- nearly falling out of a tear in the envelope) First I want to say after
- looking over 2.04 it is definately improved, but the burning question is, Did
- you send 2 disks? were are the other modules mentioned at the front of the
- manual? Did I lose a disk? Are these yet to be finished?
-
- I am pleased with the expansion of the graphics hap allowing any size image to
- be viewed.
-
- Will there ever be a way to delete a hap when it is loaded if you want, rather
- than reconfiguring your hal?
-
- Now I can see what I can do with numbers.

- I just received my update in the mail today. So before I even take the time to
- look at it let me take the time to say "thank-you" for continuing to improve
- this product. I look forward to any and all of your future efforts.
-
- And to those of you still "patiently" waiting, relax, they're coming.
-
- Thanks, again - Pat FYI, I'm in California.

- I'm going have to let George answer most of your questions about module
- availability etc, but yes there was only one disk with the upgrade. So you
- got it all...

-
- I've received one or two comments now about the envelopes we used in the
- upgrades getting destroyed in the mail - geez, what do these postal people do
- to these things?!? Anyways, only one disk in the package, so you got 'em all.
-
- As far as additional modules, they are in progress and a set of them should be
- released for Glendale, but as of yet they were not available to be included in
- the upgrade mailing. Look for more info on these in the coming weeks.
-
- RE: Deleting (ie "unloading") a HAP: I've been working a bit on it, but
- freeing up the memory isn't all that easy due to the way they load. Maybe
- next upgrade...
-
- Finally, I had a registered user printout here yesterday, but I accidentally
- took it back in to work and left it there. I'll try to bring it back so I can
- answer queries tomorrow.

- A small bug note...
-
- I have just verified a bug report on the latest versions of HyperLINK... any
- databases creating using fields that have a field name of 10 characters (the
- maximum field size) will not always work properly. The solution to this is
- use field names of 9 characters or less (ie a field named "GRANDTOTL" is OK,
- but "GRANDTOTAL" may cause problems).
-
- If you're using a HAP to access an existing dBASE or dbMAN database that has
- 10-character filenames, then that will work OK -- in such a case it will not
- be a problem to use the maximum length filenames. It is only when you create a
- new database that the problem comes up.
-
- A rather arcane bug, really... there is no chance of loosing data or bombing
- the program, the only result is that HAPs with long field names will not work
- properly (saving and retreiving data).
-
- Now, back to our regular programming...

- JMG,
-
- Thanks for clarifying the one disk in the mailer. Now for comments and
- questions.
-
- 1. I tried to use formulas to do simple addition and multiplication on a trial
- hap invoice and could not get the prg to recognize my expressions Whhat have I
- done wrong? I tried spacing and not spacing between fields and operators.
-
- I got the prg to crash, by (and I'm trying to remember the sequence of
- events) by leaving the bldr hap open and quiting the prg. (i think thats what
- happened but will try and report more specifically.)
-
- The manual is a definate improvement, but maybe a better explanation on
- expressions would help. Also while I'm at it a suggestion to allow Data Fields
- to be formatted for specific purposes, such as formatting commands in
- spreadsheets.
-
- Thanks for all your hard work ( i guess we will never be satisfied, huh :-))

- I haven't gotten mine yet. I think I have two disks, and one is v. 1.6, as I
- recall. Is that the one you said should be returned? You mentioned some kind
- of a disk had to be returned by some of us.

- I received my upgrade on Friday and the envelope was in sad shape: ripped
- about 4/5 of the way across the top and (apparently) slit open clear across
- the bottom. The only things holding it together were two yellow labels (like
- USPS address labels) across the center of the top and bottom of the envelope.
- I'm surprised the disk stayed in the package, since there was room for the
- disk to slide out between the yellow label and either end. Oh, well ... it
- made it.
-
- Thanks for the upgrade and new manual. Much improved!
-
- After loading the new version of HyperLink on my hard disk, I discovered that
- it bombed (3 bombs) while it was loading, each time I tried to execute it.
- Wouldn't run from floppy, either, with my normal system configuration.
- Naturally, I started playing with AUTO folder programs. It appears that the
- G+Plus which I normally run in my AUTO folder irritates HyperLink (I didn't
- have any conflict when I was running HyperLink 1.6). True, I haven't
- experimented _exhaustively_, but with several different mixtures of AUTO
- programs I have consistently encountered 3 bombs while loading HyperLink if
- G+Plus is one of my AUTO programs and _no_ problem loading and running
- HyperLink if G+Plus (only) is removed from whatever AUTO group I try.
-
- I normally boot with G+Plus in my AUTO folder because I need it for several of
- my other favorite applications. Has anyone else experienced a problem (3
- bombs) while loading the new HyperLink? I'd rather this be something other
- than a HyperLink/G+Plus conflict, but that's what it _looks_ like, so far, on
- my system.

- Well, I guess the first thing David and I have to make note of is to use
- better envelopes next time! Oh well, so far all the disks have made it,
- that's a good sign...
-
- Now, to answer some questions...
-
- - If you have a Version 2 (such as 2.01 from the ACE show in Toronto), then
- you will not be receiving any update from this mailing. While there have been
- some changes and bug removals to the current version (2.04), the changes are
- minor.
-
- - Using formulas etc: One thing to remember is that when using equations, you
- need to have numeric operators; make sure your source fields are NUM fields.
- Also, make sure you're using the same field name, spelled correctly. If
- you're still having some problems, post a message with some more details.
-
- - Those who have received an upgrade disk in the past (ie those who purchased
- the program before Version 1.6) must return it to receive the free upgrade to
- V2. (To Ken Van Dellen: since you originally received V1.6, you never got
- sent an update disk; your Version 2 upgrade was processed August 17th, and
- should be on the way).
-
- - HyperLINK versus G+Plus.... Hmmmm, I can't image how I developed a problem
- with G+Plus when 1.6 didn't have one, but I'll try to check into that soon.
- (First, gotta find my G+Plus disk... somewhere in this mess...) Of course,
- I'm sure the problem would have to be with G+Plus... (grin) (just kidding!)
-
-
- Glad to see HyperLINK 2 being received by people finally!
-
- -- George.

- OK, folks, this is "audience participation" time!!
-
- I've dusted off my HyperLINK Module work to (hopefully!) have a number of new
- HyperLINK modules available for Glendale. Well, I need some input into some
- of the standards I should adopt...
-
- First, with regard to the Digitized Sound module: What digitized sound format
- should I support? Originally I had planned ST Replay format support, but
- lately MOD sound files seem more common. There's also a format called SEGM
- from Europe that supposed to be better than MOD files, though I'm not sure
- why. As well, any sound file format converters out there? Also, anybody have
- some source for source (ie C programming source code for playing MOD files,
- etc.)?
-
- Second, in the Graphic formats sweepstakes... I'd like to standardize the
- colour format for TT/etc graphics support, and the nominees in my opinion are
- TIFF, GIF, or PNT (prism paint). Any suggestions?
-
- A big thanks to all suggestions and comments...
-
- -- George.

- George, with regards to sound modules are mods music only?? It should be a
- format that can play both music and other sound bites. As for graphic GIF
- would give a huge selection from all formats but how many garphic ST/TT
- programs create GIF files?
-
- Back on sound, ST Replay would probably be the most popular format to go with
- for digitized sounds but the music from the MODS I have heard are very
- impresive. What to do, What to do.... Could you also check you list when you
- have time to see when my upgrade was sent. Thanks.

- Mike,
-
- I use G+Plus and suffer no ill consequences from it while running Hyperlink
- 2.0, it is possible that your disk was corrupted in the mail, or try the old
- method of removing everthing from your auto folder and adding it back in. Also
- could it be that your taxing the computers memory? As I said I have no
- conflict with G+Plus and Hyperlink 2.0.
-
- George,
-
- You should mention in the manua that the expressions do not happen as soon as
- you enter the data, but after the data has been saved. ( I was twiddling
- around and discovered this little aspect)
-
- I think a mod player sampler module would be a good start, I would also like
- to see maybe Sound Designer file compatibility ( the pro level sample file and
- editing software)
-
- How about a module that allows you to initiate through linking another prg and
- extract data from it?
-
- I don't use color so I can't comment to much on the graphic file support.
-
- thanx

- George,
-
- The difference between MOD files and SEGM files are that the SEGM files are
- compiled and run off the DMA sound without any CPU speed loss (or noticable
- loss). SEGM files are usually MUCH, MUCH larger though -- in the megabyte
- range sometimes. SEGM files are compiled using a program called NT_COMP,
- which was written by Klaus Pedersen I think, the same author of Jukebox. It
- should be in the libraries here.

- Hi!
-
- Mark Warner.... your upgrade was processed August 17th as well. Look for it
- soon, hopefully in one piece! And thanks for your format suggestions...
-
- Gerald Nelson.... Thanks for the G+Plus mention, I didn't think it would be
- any problem so obvious as a direct incompatibility. I guess it must be
- something trickier. Also, about the expressions... yeah, unfortunately
- expressions are based on the "saved" data record, to you must for save the
- record to have the expression evaluated or updated. Being a late addition,
- that didn't get properly covered in the docs. And finally, look for a module
- in September for running external programs.
-
- Ed Krimen.... thanks for the MOD/SEGM info. Now, anyone have a source for
- some source code, or the name of someone I can try to bribe?
-
- Daniel (Vortext).... Regarding the upgrade disk, at this point you should
- probably hold on to it. The next upgrade will be a (small!) fee upgrade, and
- it will be announced on Genie and by newsletter when it happens.
-
- Ken Van Dellen.... regarding the old manual and stuff, it
